Terms of use


The TUM DataTagger is a platform for collaborative research data management in research projects. The TUM DataTagger is designed to facilitate compliance with Good Scientific Practice (https://www.gs.tum.de/promovierende/gute-wissenschaftliche-praxis/) and the implementation of the guidelines of the Technical University of Munich (TUM) on the handling of research data (https://web.tum.de/researchdata/tum-leitlinien/). The Operator of TUM DataTagger is the TUM university library.

If you use the TUM DataTagger, you agree to comply with the following terms of use.


Authorization to use and registration in the TUM DataTagger


All members of TUM (students, employees, and guests, provided they have an active TUM ID) are entitled to use the TUM DataTagger. In addition, every TUM member can invite external cooperation partners by e-mail to use the TUM DataTagger within a project created by a TUM member.

TUM members with the status “Student”, “Employee” or “Guest” register in TUM DataTagger with their valid TUM account (TUM ID, TUM password). External users register in the TUM DataTagger via Shibboleth with the access data of their respective institution or by means of their e-mail address and a self-assigned password.

They are obliged to keep their access data secret and to protect it from third parties’ access. In addition, you assume full responsibility for all actions taken using your user name in conjunction with your password.

You are obliged to inform the TUM DataTagger administration immediately of any misuse of your access data as soon as you become aware of it. In the event of misuse, change your password immediately. The operator of TUM DataTagger excludes any liability for damages resulting from unauthorized use of the password-protected login.

The operator of the TUM DataTagger reserves the right to deny users access to the TUM DataTagger, in particular in the event of violations of these terms of use.


Creating content in the TUM DataTagger


For content that you upload or create in the TUM DataTagger, you are responsible for ensuring that this content does not violate applicable German law. For example, content must not:



  • constitute libel or defamation of other natural or legal persons,

  • infringe copyrights or other industrial property rights (such as trademark rights, design rights, utility model rights, patent rights, etc.),

  • cause damage to persons or property (e.g., through virus attacks, chain letters, spam, etc.) or harass persons in any other way,

  • violate the rights of other persons - such as data protection or general personal rights,

  • contain any infringing, extremist, pornographic, obscene, indecent, offensive or illegal elements,

  • incite or promote unlawful or unconstitutional acts.


When creating user-generated content, you undertake to indemnify the operator of the TUM DataTagger against all third-party claims that could be asserted against the operator of the TUM DataTagger, regardless of the legal grounds (including claims under copyright law and due to a violation of personal rights). The indemnification shall include reasonable costs of legal defense. By agreeing to these Terms of Use, you also agree to the above indemnification.


Please note that user-generated content is not checked by the operator of the TUM DataTagger.


By posting content, you grant the operator of the TUM DataTagger the right to store the content permanently, both in the TUM DataTagger and for backup purposes.


Storage of personal data


When posting personal data, you undertake to comply with the applicable laws, in particular the GDPR, BDSG, and BayDSG. Please also refer to the Privacy Policy. Storage of sensitive personal data is not allowed in TUM DataTagger. This applies especially to data revealing racial or ethnic origin, political opinions, religious or philosophical beliefs, or trade union membership, and the processing of genetic data, biometric data for the purpose of uniquely identifying a natural person, data concerning health or data concerning a natural person’s sex life or sexual orientation (special categories according to Art. 9 GDPR).


Rights to TUM DataTagger content and its use


All users are responsible for compliance with applicable copyright law when publishing contributions.


Use of content


Unauthorized usage of individual contents or complete pages will be prosecuted under civil and criminal law.


Storage of content


By posting their contribution to the TUM DataTagger, users grant the operator of the TUM DataTagger the right to save the contribution permanently.


Deletion of content


Users only have a claim against the operator of the TUM DataTagger for deletion of the contributions they have made if this is required for legal reasons (e.g. data protection, personal rights).

Users are authorized to delete content from their own “My draft files” are This area is intended to be used as a temporary repository for uploaded files in preparation for sharing with other project members. Files including metadata can be deleted here both by the user and by the system if the files are not assigned to a folder within 30 days.


Duration of access rights


TUM members are automatically anonymized, and their accounts are deactivated ten years after their last login. Three months before such anonymization, you will receive an e-mail informing you. If you do not respond, the anonymization will take place as planned. You can also request anonymization immediately. If you do not wish to be anonymized, simply log in to the TUM DataTagger.

For external users, the account will be deactivated three years after the last login.


Purpose of use


The TUM DataTagger is to be used exclusively for the purpose of research data management in research projects with TUM participation.
